Spring Into Summer: Preparing Your Mesa Pool for the Heat

As the Arizona wildflowers bloom and the desert temperatures begin their steady climb toward the triple digits, one thing is on every Mesa homeowner’s mind: pool season. While many parts of the country are just starting to think about “opening” their pools, here in the Valley, we know that spring is our most critical window for maintenance.

Prepping your pool now ensures that when the first 100-degree day hits, your water is sparkling, safe, and ready for a cannonball. At Davis Pool Service, we’ve been helping our neighbors in Mesa and the East Valley get summer-ready since 1972.

1. Give Your Filtration System a Check-Up

Your pump and filter are the heart of your pool. During the winter, they likely ran on a shorter cycle. Before summer, it’s essential to:

  • Clean or Backwash the Filter: Whether you have a cartridge, sand, or DE filter, start the season with a clean slate.
  • Inspect O-Rings and Seals: The dry Arizona air can cause rubber gaskets to crack. A little pool lube can go a long way in preventing air leaks.
  • Check the Pump Motor: Listen for any unusual grinding or humming. If your motor sounds like it’s struggling, contact our repair experts to fix it before it fails in the July heat.

2. Update Your Pump Timer

In the winter, you might have gotten away with running your pump for 4–6 hours. As the sun gets stronger, algae can bloom in a matter of hours if the water isn’t moving.

The Rule of Thumb: Aim for 8–12 hours of filtration during the peak of summer to ensure all the water is cycled and sanitized properly.

3. Balance the “Desert” Chemistry

Arizona water is notoriously “hard,” meaning it’s high in calcium. Over time, this leads to white scaling on your tiles.

  • Test Your Levels: Bring a water sample into our shop or use a high-quality kit to check your pH, Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness.
  • Condition the Water: Make sure you use a stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid). Think of this as “sunscreen for your chlorine”—without it, the Mesa sun will burn through your chlorine in just a few hours.

4. Inspect Your Cleaning Equipment

Is your automatic pool cleaner sluggish? Does your net have a hole in it? Spring is the time to replace worn-out parts. At Davis Pool Service, we stock a wide variety of parts for brands like Polaris, Pentair, and Hayward.

5. Don’t Forget the Surfaces

Mesa winds often blow debris and organic matter into the pool during the spring. Be sure to:

  • Brush the Walls: Even if the water looks clear, microscopic algae can cling to the walls.
  • Scrub the Tile Line: If you notice a white “ring” forming around the edge, address it now before the sun bakes it on permanently.
